Sample Lesson One

Great Fourth Grade Readers Can Choose Just Right Books

Curricular Objective:

By teaching students better strategies for reading they will be able to choose different genres of books. They will become familiar with reading fiction, non fiction, science and autobiographies.

Task:

Students will be paired up with a partner and will be given sets of fiction, non fiction, autobiographies and science books. Students should then choose their book of choice. Next, students should choose the book that is just right for them by taking the following steps. The students should ask themselves while reading the first two pages if there were more than four words that they did not understand. Did they understand what they were reading, and did they like what they read. If they answered yes to more than one then that is the right book for them. After discussing this as a team the students should then place their work on an excel spread sheet.

Process:

1. Students will then open up the excel program.
2. Students will place books read down the side of their spread sheet, and the questions asked across the top.
3. Record all information by answering yes or no to the questions in each individual box.
4. Make the title bold, and change the background to green.
5. Be sure to include both first and last names on the bottom of your spread sheet.
